Aircon Running But Not Cooling? Here's What's Likely Wrong

Aircon running but no cold air? Common causes are a clogged filter, low refrigerant, a frozen coil or a thermostat issue. Here's how to tell — and when to call a licensed technician.

The four most common reasons your aircon won’t cool

You come home sweating from the 35°C Klang Valley afternoon heat, hit the remote, and feel nothing but a lukewarm breeze. It feels like a major disaster waiting to happen.

The good news is that a sudden lack of cold air rarely means your whole system is dead.

Aircon repair actually starts with a very simple, step-by-step diagnosis. We find that most aircon not cooling issues come down to one of four common problems. Working through them in order saves you serious money and prevents unnecessary downtime.

1. Dirty filter or coil

A clogged filter is the single most common reason your aircon is not cold. Dust buildup physically blocks the airflow, causing the evaporator coil to ice over and drop cooling efficiency sharply.

We regularly see units struggling simply because of normal indoor dust. The heavy local humidity means fans must work harder to push air through restricted mesh.

Local guidelines suggest specific cleaning intervals for our climate:

  • Light usage (few hours a week): Clean every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Normal usage (daily use, 6-10 hours): Clean every 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Heavy usage (24/7 or dusty areas): Clean every 14 days.

A quick check takes only two minutes. Pop the front panel off your indoor unit and look at the mesh screen. Gray, fuzzy buildup means it is time for a wash.

2. Low refrigerant (with a leak somewhere)

If your filters are spotless but the system is still blowing warm air, your unit has likely lost its refrigerant charge. Low gas means you have a physical leak somewhere in the copper lines or connection joints.

Our technicians frequently hear customers ask if the gas just evaporated over time. Refrigerant operates in a sealed loop and never simply runs out. Ice forming on the outdoor copper pipes is a classic warning sign of low system pressure.

We always pressure test the system to locate the exact leak before adding any R32 or R410A gas. Skipping the leak repair guarantees the new gas will just escape again. Read our aircon gas top up page for a completely honest breakdown of how this process should work.

Watch out for these classic signs of a leak:

SymptomWhat It Means
Ice on outdoor pipesLow pressure is causing condensation to freeze.
Faint hissing near unitRefrigerant is actively escaping from a joint.
Running non-stopThe system cannot reach the desired room temperature.

3. Frozen evaporator coil

A solid block of ice on your indoor coil stops all heat transfer, resulting in aircon weak cooling or no cooling at all. This happens as a direct result of either restricted airflow from a dirty filter or a pressure drop from a gas leak.

We see this constantly during the rainy season when humidity levels are at their peak. Moisture in the air condenses on the super-cooled copper coils inside the indoor unit. If the coil temperature drops below 0°C, that condensation instantly freezes into a solid sheet.

You cannot force a frozen unit to cool the room. Switch the power off at the wall and let the ice melt naturally before investigating further.

Follow these steps for safe thawing:

  1. Turn the system completely off at the main switch.
  2. Place a few towels under the indoor unit to catch dripping water.
  3. Wait at least 1 to 2 hours for total thawing.
  4. Never use a hairdryer to speed it up, as the heat melts the plastic fins.

If the unit freezes a second time after melting, a larger mechanical issue exists.

4. Thermostat, remote or PCB issue

Sometimes the aircon physically works fine, but the internal brain thinks the room is already cold enough. Faulty sensors, weak remote batteries, or a corrupted Printed Circuit Board (PCB) will stop the compressor from engaging.

Our team always checks the simplest settings first. Make sure your remote is actually set to “Cool” mode with the snowflake icon, rather than “Fan” or “Dry” mode.

The Energy Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) strongly recommends a temperature setting between 24°C and 26°C for optimal efficiency. Dropping the remote to 16°C does not cool the room faster, but it does put unnecessary strain on the temperature sensors.

If your settings are correct, look for a flashing timer light on the indoor unit. Modern systems display specific error codes to help diagnose the electrical fault.

Common communication faults include:

BrandError CodeCommon Cause
PanasonicH11Indoor to outdoor communication failure, usually wiring or PCB.
DaikinU0System refrigerant shortage or a sensor malfunction.

When to call a licensed technician

You can safely handle filter cleaning and remote battery swaps on your own. Anything involving gas pressure, electrical wiring, or PCB diagnostics requires a licensed professional.

We cannot stress enough how quickly a small issue turns into a massive repair bill. Running a struggling compressor in the local heat will eventually burn out the motor. A full compressor replacement can easily set you back over RM 1,000 depending on the horsepower.

A simple service call is much cheaper than replacing major hardware. If basic troubleshooting fails to restore cold air within a day, stop running the machine immediately.

Our technicians diagnose every unit transparently before starting any actual work. You receive a clear, upfront quote explaining exactly what failed. Sometimes, restoring that crisp cold air just requires a thorough chemical wash instead of replacing expensive parts. Schedule a proper diagnosis to get your home comfortable again.

Got Questions?

Frequently asked questions

Why is my aircon running but not cold?
Common causes are a clogged filter, low refrigerant from a leak, or a frozen coil. A quick filter clean may help, but persistent warm air usually needs a licensed diagnosis.
Can a dirty filter stop my aircon cooling?
Yes — a heavily clogged filter restricts airflow and can freeze the coil, which cuts cooling. Regular servicing prevents this.
Should I top up the gas if the aircon isn't cooling?
Only after a leak check. A unit that's lost refrigerant has a leak — blind top-ups just buy a few weeks before cooling fades again.
